Christmas isn’t just for us, but it’s also a wonderful time of year for the animals in our life. Whether you have dogs, cats, rabbits or any other type of loved animal in your family then Pet Insurance provider, Petplan have a wonderful Pet Advent Calendar to help make things extra special for them too…
As someone who’s grown up with pets, I’ve always known the huge impact that they can have on your life. As a teenager we rescued the most beautiful and wonderful Golden Retriever named Oliver (Ollie-dog as we used to call him.) And for many, many years he was as much a part of the family as anyone else. He was there through my teenage heartbreak, he was there everyday when we came home from school with a cuddle and huge amount of love and he was my best friend when I suffered from a bad illness that affected me for almost a year. I remember the way Ollie was a big bag of goofy love – and we all adored him. Ollie left a mark on all of our hearts and gave us so many amazing years and memories.
When Ollie passed away we never thought that as a family we could love another dog like we loved him. And for many years we didn’t even try. That’s just how much of a huge part of a family your pet can become. But after my parents started to get nearly-empty nest syndrome they decided to get a puppy – and here we are a year later with Finlay. The most excitable ‘toddler-doggy’ as we call him. Finlay’s huge personality, energy, constant excitement and his friendly nature have slotted right into our family and we all adore him. My children ask to see him almost daily and spend hours running around playing with him. He makes us laugh constantly and we say that him and my 2 year old are like dog/human twins – their lease on life is exactly the same!
As a family who love Christmas, this means that Finlay is treated exactly the same as all of us at this time of year. Basically, my Mum spoils him rotten! And when she prepares our Christmas stockings (yes I’m 32 and my Mum still makes me a stocking each year) Finlay now gets one too! Naturally. Another tradition that he gets to uphold from his doggy point of view is having an Advent Calendar because Petplan, one of the UK’s leading pet insurance companies, have launched their own Pet Advent Calendar that’s running now, right through until Christmas eve. Every day in December you visit the Advent Calendar and there’s the opportunity to win amazing pet prizes that your animal family members will love. Some of the prizes include things like Cat Champagne, Doggy Yoga classes, new cosy beds, a pet camera and so much more. So now we’re all visiting daily to see if we can snap up an extra special treat for Finlay.
Alongside our hopeful visits to the Advent Calendar, we’re also working through some everyday gift ideas to make sure Santa leaves something special under the tree for him too. Although Finlay is now nearly 2 years old, he’s still very much a puppy/toddler in terms of everything. So he likes chew toys, a lot! We’ve been stocking up on some festive toys to add to his huge collection – although I doubt anything will take the place of his trusty favourite grey squirral for long!
We’re also planning to get a brand new bowl with his name on. We’re big fans of personalised mugs and things like that in our family (if you don’t have a new mug with your name on each Christmas you’re probably not in our clan!) so Finlay, naturally, needs one too. My parents live in a farmhouse-style home so they really like the old school bowls which fit with their decor. I’m sure we’ll keep the old one outside for post-walkies drinks and the new one indoors so nothing goes to waste.
Because Finlay is so loved, he also gets his own head shots proudly displayed around my parents home. In fact, he recently received this hand painted Christmas decoration as an early gift from a doggy friend and it’s made my Mum’s day! Finlay gave it a good sniff, and a sign of approval in doing so, but this one was more for my Mum. I can imagine at Christmas that Finlay (a.k.a Mum) will be getting more memorabilia with his face on to decorate the various surfaces in their house.
With animals though, it’s not just about the physical gifts or the treats we give them to celebrate special occasions – as nice as they are. It’s about essentials to their well being and it’s an important time to practice being good pet owners. Petplan are an award-winning Pet Insurance company who specialise in giving the best cover for your animal family members. As a market-leader in offering ‘lifetime’ policies, Petplan are one of the few companies who can offer you a true policy that lasts the years. They also offer a standard 12 month policy to suit many different needs as well. Every pet deserves a loving family to enjoy Christmas with, but they also deserve to be looked after should the worst happen – or even if they just need a little TLC and a vet checkup.
As well as being the Uk’s Number 1 Pet Insurance provider, Petplan also work with more animal rehoming charities than any other pet insurance provider. Working with over 1,200 individual charities across the UK, alongside forming their own Petplan Charitable Trust (which has so far raised over £11 million towards building a healthier world for animals) Petplan show their incredible passion for animals in everything they do. So they’re the insurance provider you can count on for your much loved animal family members this Christmas.
In the hustle and bustle of everything festive, we’re really looking forward to spending some time with Finlay this Christmas – including our Boxing Day walk, which I think he loves just as much as his doggy Christmas dinner! We’re also feeling very lucky and hoping that the Pet Advent Calendar will surprise us with a treat or two. If you have family pets, or pets yourself, then don’t forget to check it out daily for chances to win.
