This winter why not mix up your regular shampoo & conditioner, and maybe a few extra styling essentials and see how much better your hair feels for it with these new hair care products?
It’s no secret that a change in season can do bad things for our hair and skin. Suddenly the sunshine and its Vitamin D disappears (in our case, literally overnight) and we’re surrounded by central heating, ice cold air and lots of rain. I’ve written so many times about great things to try in the seasonal switch for beauty of different types, but today we’re looking at some great hair care products that have landed on my doorstep in recent months and all offer a perfect alternative for winter hair care.
Josh Wood Colour Shade Refresh
Best For: Coloured Hair
I love high performance, good quality shampoo & conditioner. When you find the right ones it can actually make you look forward to washing your hair – no joke. The Josh Wood Colour Shade Refresh products are great for coloured hair – there’s a blonde duo or a brunette duo and they’re suitable for all tones within that. At only £10 each and usually on 3 for 2 or some other type of offer, they’re very affordable and easy to pick up. Because they’re for all tones of blonde or brunette they’re not going to target hair the way a purple shampoo would for example, but what they will do is brighten the hair as a whole and refresh its vibrancy. These have got anti-fade UV technology, which means you colour should last a little longer too. So if you’re looking to keep hair brighter and more shiny then this is the duo you’ll want on your shower shelf.
Charles Worthington Volume & Bounce
Best For: Volume
I went to an event last month and got my hair done by the stylists from Charles Worthington and they used the new Volume & Bounce products which sold me on them instantly. I’m a bit sceptical of hair care products that claim to give volume even to thin and fine hair, because having the most flat hair in the world, I’ve learned that sometimes ‘weightless’ doesn’t always mean that…Imagine me with hair so weighed down with products that I look like I’ve got no hair at all from the front!
Anyway, this range actually gives a crazy amount of volume that lasts without weighing even my hair down. The Weightless Shampoo (£6.99) is a must, it’s a great everyday shampoo that adds to the other products in the range when used altogether. I then follow with the Weightless Foam Conditioner (£6.99) which is pretty fun – have you ever tried a foam conditioner before?! It works in the same way, applied in the shower after shampoo and at a practical level hair feels soft and clean after using this set together. And finally the Body Booster Mousse (£6.99) which is my absolute favourite – a mousse that actually does give volume without weighing my hair down at all! And it gives an instant and visual lift to the hair – it’s like someone’s taken a blow dryer to the roots and amped up the volume. I just can’t recommend it highly enough! This whole range claims to increase volume by up to 155% and having used it, I can testify to a whole lot more volume.
Living Proof Hair Styling & Finishing
Best For: Styling
I love Living Proof products, in general they give that premium feel but also work so well. One product I rebuy religiously throughout the year is their PHD (Perfect Hair Day) Body Builder (£23). This is a traditional hairspray that offers a medium, good hold that’s what you’d want everyday for your hair but alongside that it also creates texture in the hair from the root to the tip – so it’s great for styling at the same time. If you use a styling spray and then a hairspray to hold afterwards, then this saves you a job as it nicely combines both in one. I use this most days, especially as I always wave or curl my hair and it just helps to create a bit of definition in the style.
If you’re someone who struggles with frizzy hair that needs help taming, then the Living Proof Instant De-Frizzer is one of those ace hair care products you’ll love. Fortified with a unique 5-oil blend and the brand’s patented Healthy Hair Molecule, it’s a one spray wonder for taming flyaways and really frizzy hair. If I find that the fine hair on my scalp, or my curls become less sleek and glossy, a spray of this pulls them back in line – it’s one of those products you’ll use a lot more than you expect.
Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Range
Best For: Repairing
One range of hair care products that you’ll want in the shower with you to make you actually look forward to hair washing days, is the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Range. Specifically their Hydrate & Repair Multi-Action Leave In Conditioner (£6.59.) I love this product because it almost searches out where my hair needs nourishing and treats it directly by fortifying the hair and helping to build it’s strength. And it’s organic shea butter, manuka honey and yogurt ingredients mean there’s no nasties to worry about – and it smells beautiful too.
I also love the matching Hydrate & Repair Protein Power Treatment (£10.99) which is everything a hair mask should be – rich, nourishing and leaves hair looking super soft and shiny. It’s not too heavy and because it’s made with organic ingredients it’s not going to weigh the hair down either. If you over colour or over process your hair this one works to restore the balance of the hair itself – so it’s like one of those products to add to overall hair health in every way – it’s a hair essential if you ask me.
Tigi Bed Head
Best for: winter saviours
I was sent this really cute package from Tigi a little while ago and it featured some lovely product to help protect hair from the winter elements. Included was some of the Fully Loaded Shampoo & Conditioner (both on sale for £5.98) which is a volumising range I’ve used before. So if you’re looking for a premium hair care brand that offers volume boosting principles, then this is it – and I must say, the range smells amazing. I also like that in creating volume in the hair, this duo eliminates product build up, so my hair feels a lot lighter when I’m using it.
If you’re Tigi shopping then also check out their Urban Antidotes Resurrection Treatment Mask which is great if you use hair stylers every day, like me. It helps to enrich the hair with the lost nutrients that are taken away by constant heat exposure. So it helps to rebuild the health within the individual strands of hair. It’s like adding water to something that’s parched and my hair viably looks better, softer and more moisturised when I use this.
CoLab Dry Shampoo
Best For: Non-Hair Wash Days
Now admittedly, I wanted to talk about the products that make you look forward to washing your hair, but this kinda still works, right? If you find a great dry shampoo then it makes hair maintenance much better and a great budget-friendly dry shampoo is the CoLab Original which is only £3.49 and makes non-hair wash days much easier. Which in turn makes you look forward to washing your hair because you can do it when you want to, not because your hair is telling you that it needs it. This dry shampoo absorbs oil and grease so hair looks matte and fresh for longer between hair washing and there’s no white residue which is rare for a dry shampoo. So it’s a product I pick up when I’m passing the shops and I’m now never without.
So there we have it – the best hair care products to make you look forward to actually washing your hair – who knew that was possible?! As a busy mum, shower time is usually the only 5 minutes of peace I get each day, so I really like using good products that work well and make me feel good – and that counts for my hair too. Having tried all of these I can vouch for them and regularly use and rebuy them. So if you’re hair shopping, enjoy these favourites of mine.
