I’ve now returned from my dream Honeymoon in Mexico (prepare yourself for even more holiday spam across my blog as well as my Instagram account!) So I’m kicking off the post-holiday content with some details of what I packed in my travel beauty bag…
I had quite a few messages on holiday asking if I was going to be sharing what beauty bits I’d taken with me for my trip. And naturally, the answer was YES because this girl can’t resist the opportunity to share her beauty picks of the moment! And when it comes to holidays and trips away I’m a notorious over-packer. Especially in the beauty stakes because I can’t narrow down what I want to take, and I pack for all eventualities. This year I managed to cut down to 4 pairs of shoes in total (a record for me) but yet I still took a crate of skincare, make up and other goodies. What can I say? The girl can leave the country but not the beauty addiction!
As I have done before many of my holidays, I made a bee-line for Fragrance Direct for a pre-trip haul. I’ve got a lot of my sun creams and things from them countless times because they’re such good value and you get a great mix of budget friendly brands as well as the premium versions all in one place. As well as this they have all the normal skincare, make up, toiletries, hair care etc – and everything is up to 75% off the normal retail price. So it’s a good place to stock up before your travels.
So, what was in my travel beauty bag?
I have to start with the Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette (£39.99) because I LOVE the fact you can pick it up from Fragrance Direct along with all your essentials. Urban Decay are one of my favourite brands and everyone loves their collection of Naked palettes don’t they?! The Naked 3 is a firm fan favourite as one of the originals and it’s a great one for holidays because it’s got a lovely pinky hue running throughout the shades. As well as this you’ve got some cooler toned shades towards the latter part of the compact which means you’ve got nice, bright and eye-widening colours for the lids and some great smokey greys and black for the transition to create definition. I personally love this palette for making my eyes look wider with a shimmery lid and a smokey outer corner.
Another fab beauty brand I found during my browsing was Bare Minerals who are now available at Fragrance Direct too! (It was my lucky day, clearly.) So I picked up their Complexion Rescue Tinted Gel Cream as a coverage product for the times I didn’t want a foundation but wanted something more than sun cream. Containing a lightly tinted gel that adds a hint of colour to the skin, it also contains SPF 30 so it was a great product to have on holiday. I didn’t ever wear less than SPF 30 on my face during the whole trip so this was great for that reason. I mostly used this in the mornings before we left the room and walked to the Breakfast restaurant etc. I should also mention that it’s only £19.99 instead of the usual RRP £29 – winner.
I take a lot of lipsticks on holiday with me and a real treat was picking up one of the Prima Makeup One True Pairing Lip Duo’s which is a great way of getting a summery lip look. There’s several sets to pick from and each contains one matte liquid lipstick and a top coat gloss with shimmery finish. So you’ve got three different looks per set: one matte, one gloss or both worn together for something pretty impressive. I’ve seen sets like this cost a small fortune but these are only £9.99 and I can’t fault them.
Travel Beauty Tip: take new brushes
Who really has time to clean all their brushes before they go on holiday? Because I certainly don’t! I’m usually running around like a mad woman packing until the very last minute so I know that even with the best will and intention, I’ll never have time to clean my brushes before I go. So I’ve always purchased a budget friendly brush set to take with me in my travel beauty bag instead and I got a great set from LaRoc which came in a travel-sized tin and had plenty of face and eye brushes. It’s currently sold out but here’s a great alternative for only £8.25 if you’re looking for something similar yourself.
Another tip for being on holiday when it comes to what you pack – is to always take a little lip balm for your beach bag. I always forget how drying it can be on the lips to be in the sun all day. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to keep lips hydrated, in fact I got a great coconut scented Balmi Lip Balm for only £2.75 and it did the job perfectly – and it smelt absolutely divine!
Body Care Beauty
Being on holiday is a time when I can really indulge in some body pampering. I’m usually sprinting through shower time during my everyday life in order to do the school run on time and not have a toddler pounding on the door to join me for ‘SHUWER TIME!” So when I’m away and can make the most of it, I like to take some really great products with me and this time I went for the REN Clean Skincare Atlantic Anti-Fatigue Body Wash and matching Atlantic Kelp & Magnesium Body Cream as a great shower time duo. I am a huge fan of REN Clean Skincare products anyway and I love this range because it’s so fresh on the skin. It makes skin feel clean, nourished and revived thanks to the energizing Magnesium PCA and the anti-fatigue essential oils. Which also happen to smell beautiful too so it made shower time really relaxing.
The Atlantic Kelp & Magnesium Body Cream was a great follow-on post shower. Both me and my husband used this every day and found it was a great way of keeping skin soft and nourished but most importantly, hydrated. Skin can get so dry when you’re sunbathing a lot, especially when you don’t do it frequently so using this ensured neither of us felt our skin was dry or suffering. We didn’t even need after sun because this did the job of hydrating perfectly.
If you’re going on holiday – you NEED this product!
Another item I picked up for my travel beauty bag was the NUXE After Sun Hair and Body Shampoo because it sounded nice and I was browsing anyway. It sounded pretty good but oh-my-actual-days…it’s an amazing product that I’m running to rebuy now I’m home. I am a bit particular about hating the feel of my skin with sea water on it, and I don’t like the way chlorine from a pool makes skin feel by the end of the day either. Add in sun cream, sand and sweat etc…well, I used to just straight in the shower post sunbathing session! This genius product removes all traces of everything holiday related at the end of the day. It also removes all UV filter residue from the skin which is good to know and it feels lovely, AND smells INSANELY YUMMY! My husband used this as his daily shampoo too and his hair was soft and nourished as well. I can’t recommend this highly enough if you’re going on holiday – you need this product and it’s only a tenner!
And obviously I packed a lot of sun protection in my bag. Being fair skinned I burn really easily and tanning isn’t something I achieve naturally very well. I just go a slightly bronzed colour at most and have to be so careful I don’t burn. My favourite brand of sun protection for everyday is Australian Gold and I have used them for years because they contain instant bronzer which helps me look a little bit more holiday-mode when I’m sun worshipping! I stocked up on both the 30 SPF and the 50 SPF before I went. They smell lovely, have that instant bronze that looks great on skin and offer lovely protection. They’re not one of those brands you see in the High Street shops either so I love knowing I can always stock up from Fragrance Direct before I travel.
Skincare shouldn’t be forgotten in the sunshine
Just because you’re on holiday doesn’t mean that skincare should be forgotten in the sunshine. While it’s tempting to get slack on your thorough skincare regime, I highly recommend not doing that. Taking key products is how you can ensure you skin is nourished, doesn’t suffer sun damage (which by the way can cause premature signs of ageing) and ensures that once you’re home and out of the Vitamin D so much, your skin doesn’t purge. I took the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel with me as a great place to start with my daily skincare and used it morning and night. Our hotel room was beautifully air conditioned over night (thank goodness because Mexico doesn’t go below 27 degrees, even at night!) but it did make me feel like I wanted a good face wash first thing – and this was perfect. It’s very delicate, soft and great for all skin types including the most sensitive. It’s soap free and lathers up perfectly to wash anything and everything away and it’s fabulous before using serums, moisturisers and sun protection etc.
So there’s a look inside my travel beauty bag from my honeymoon in Mexico! As you can see I like to make sure my holiday bag contains lots of essentials that are targeted towards the climate I was expecting and being overseas. I also take a few bits in my hand luggage and a lot of make up because this girl can’t narrow down her list! But this was my very happy and healthy looking travel beauty bag of essentials. All of which I picked up from Fragrance Direct.
Hopefully you’ve find it interesting seeing some of what came away with me, and maybe even added a few bits to your own travel beauty wish-list! Let me know if you’ve got your eye on anything in particular or even if you’re going to be doing your own little Fragrance Direct Haul!
