World Duty Free – the mecca of pre-holiday shopping! With so much choice it can be hard to know where to start. So here’s a breakdown of the best beauty buys this summer…
If you’re off on your holidays in the coming months then you’ll likely already be making a mental shopping note of what to pick up from World Duty Free (please tell me I’m not the only one who does this?!) It’s the pre-holiday ritual I look forward to the most and there’s nothing better than a great beauty buy at duty free prices.
This year if you’re travelling through Gatwick airport you can also indulge in their Summer Festival event. I’ve written about everything you can get up to and experience, so make sure you check that out if Gatwick is your holiday airport this year. And if not, well, you can still enjoy shopping galore at any World Duty Free store!
So, when it comes to the actual shopping you’ll want to make the most of it. I’m talking about the brand-name bits which work out far cheaper than the high-street and the range of Travel Exclusives that you won’t find anywhere else. So I recommend balancing your shopping out with both. These are my top picks for the summer and the bits I picked out when I attended the Gatwick Summer Festival recently…
One of my all-time favourites and everyday make up staples is the Benefit Hoola bronzer. I use this everyday to contour with and when I go on holiday I use it literally everywhere as a body and face bronzer. It’s got the perfect cool-tone colour that suits all skin tones and it’s completely matte which is perfect for me as I don’t like to contour with a shimmery bronzer. I’ve always got a box on the go, and World Duty Free have a Travel Exclusive Duo that features two full sized versions together for only £41 so you’ve got one for now and one for then. It’s a summer holiday essential for sure.
Ever wondered what the perfect lipstick is for a summer holiday? Well the Lipstick Queen Mornin’ Sunshine is it! And don’t worry, it’s not actually yellow! Some of the Lipstick Queen products are specially formulated to work with the natural pH balance of your skin to turn the perfect shade for you and in this case, Mornin’ Sunshine goes from yellow to the perfect pink tone coral. Which is a great colour for those summer days and nights. Applied like a normal lipstick it quickly develops on the lips turning coral pink and giving you a bright pop of colour that perfectly compliments your skin tone. So it’s completely unique to you.
If you’re looking for a great eyeshadow palette to create all your summer looks with, then this is a really versatile one to add to your collection. Not only does the Urban Decay Naked Reloaded have a selection of everyday neutral tones in a variety of finishes but it also offers the perfect combination of colours to work for both normal home-days and also holiday days! You’ll be able to create a barely there and beautiful eye look for summer mornings and something altogether more seductive for the summertime evenings with the darker tones when creating a smokey eye. There’s so many looks you can create with this, it’s a great palette for the summer and worth getting at duty free prices.
I recommend using an eyeshadow primer in the summer and especially when you go on holiday. Although you might not want it during the day, when you’re going out in the evenings you’re going to want something that holds your shadow in place. Especially if you’ve worked hard on your look! The Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is a fail-safe primer that works well at gripping shadows and holding them to the skin on your lids. It’s easily applied, lasts ages and really intensifies your eyeshadow colours.
You can’t visit World Duty Free and not buy a new perfume. It’s practically the law, right? But which one should you pick? Seeing as it’s the perfect opportunity to try something new and different, I recommend the Missoni EDP which not only looks absolutely beautiful (can we take a moment to appreciate the bottle please?!) but smells lovely too. It’s got citrus and lemon top notes so it’s got that summer vibe nailed with base notes of woody sandalwood to keep things sensual. It reminds me of warm summer evenings on holiday when you’re walking around a market taking in the sights. It’s one of those fragrances you’ll pick up and make memories wearing and then when you wear it afterwards you’ll always be transported back to those moments in time.
Any type of water or spray skincare product is something you should look at when shopping for beauty picks on your holiday because no matter what’s its primary use is, it will at it’s minimum refresh tired skin. The Dior Hydra Life Balancing Sorbet Water is like a toner that’s used as part of your normal skincare regime and it works to hydrate as well as helping to minimise minor imperfections. Sprayed on to the skin you’ll find it leaves you soft, soothed and glowing while skin gets the benefits of increased moisture levels. I think this would be great sitting on the balcony when you go on holiday and want some out-of-the-sun time during the afternoons.
Being the eyeshadow palette addict that I am, I couldn’t resist some more eyeshadows. And while I do think that the Urban Decay is the perfect summer palette for your staple needs, I also think that picking up a limited edition Chanel quad is a treat too tempting to miss! This little baby has some everyday tones to help take just-got-out-of-bed eyes to the dance floor: it’s versatile, pretty and did I mention it’s A CHANEL LIMITED EDITION? That’s enough reason to treat yourself right there.
I swear by the Benefit Brow Contour Pro as one of my everyday brow products. I’ve yet to find another pencil product that I love more, so naturally I stocked up during my World Duty Free visit to make the most of the discounted price. This nifty pen has two shades for the brow and two highlight shades as well, so you can sculpt out a whole brow with ease. There’s also multiple shades to pick from so you can get the closest match for you.
The great thing about Travel Exclusives are that they can’t be found anywhere else and they’re totally unique to World Duty Free. The By Terry My Beauty Favourites set for example is a five-piece miniature set that contains some of the best-selling By Terry products for you to try before buying the full size. Inside you’ll find things like the Hyaluronic Setting Powder and the Baume De Rose which is one of the most well-known products from the brand. Sets like this are a must-have when shopping as you don’t want to miss the opportunity to try a wide range of products from new brands for a fraction of the price. Plus who can resist mini make up?
I couldn’t possibly resist a stop at Jo Malone when I was doing my shopping now could I!? A girl can never have too much Jo Malone and I knew I wanted the Honeysuckle & Davana scent for a while. If there’s a brand to take advantage of when shopping and saving the VAT – it’s Jo Malone. I got the 30ml EDC for £37.60 and it’s the perfect handbag or beach bag size. Plus it’s got this beautiful sunflower-type scent that’s floral and summery all in one. It smells like warm flowers in the heat and I just love it.
And to finish off my best beauty buys it has to be a totally indulgent candle from Jo Malone. I was tempted to buy the matching candle to the fragrance I picked up but I didn’t want to waste the opportunity to get two completely different scents. English Pear & Freesia is so lovely and sweet, it reminds me of an English Garden and it’s got a light and feminine scent that’s going to smell perfect in my house. It’s subtle but sophisticated and it’s a luxury purchase with a feel-good factor. And that’s the great thing about shopping at World Duty Free – it always makes you feel good (or at least it does for me!)
So there we have it! A little haul and the bits I highly recommend as my best beauty buys if you’re shopping in World Duty Free this summer. There’s something for everyone here and a good deal of summer essentials, luxury treats and daily staples so you’re covered either way. And of course, shopping is the perfect way to start your holiday – or at least it is for me anyway! Don’t forget that if you’re short of time and still want to treat yourself or stock up then you can use the click and collect option which allows you to order your goodies and collect them in store on your way through. Which is a great alternative if you’re low on browsing time and know what you want.
So all that’s left to say now, is happy shopping! And don’t forget to show me what you pick up on your travels!
