It may look scary but this little handheld gadget is a must have tool for the skincare junkies among us.
When it comes to skincare, I’ll give anything a go. If I think it can help my skin, improve my problem areas and increase skin health then I’m all for it. And that journey has taken me to some pretty extreme measures at times – from weird and wonderful facials to products containing ingredients that I never thought I’d want near my face! The latest addition to my list of tried and tested skincare things, is a Derma Roller. And it’s less wacky and more…well, pretty cool actually.
What is a Derma Roller?
Basically a Derma Roller is a handheld tool that looks like a miniature paint roller with a rotating end. On this rotating end are lots of tiny needles, and although it does look scary, when you understand how it works then you come to realise it’s not scary at all.
How does a Derma Roller work?
Well, this is the cool bit. You move your Derma Roller around the face and neck area and it sort of punctures the skin. Only at the very top level, there’s no blood or anything. It’s just enough to open the pores for a brief period of time and that action makes your skin think it’s hurt and that it needs to repair itself.
Why would you use a Derma Roller?
Opening the pores in this way tricks the skin into thinking it needs to repair itself, which is does by stimulating collagen and elastin production. This process reveals the new, fresh layer of skin below the surface that looks new, smooth and radiant. It’s a way of encouraging your skin’s natural ability to produce good chemicals that make it look and feel better. Effectively using a Derma Roller is encouraging good skin naturally using your own body function.
How big are the needles?
You can pick the size of your needle, but I recommend starting small while you get used to the sensation. (Which isn’t painful but is noticeable.) The choices are 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 2.5mm.
Do you use the Derma Roller with skincare products?
While you can use the Derma Roller alone, the use of the tiny needles is a great way of improving your skincare products efficiency. The needles create tiny pathways deeper into the skin so the products you use are carried down deeper and penetrate more of the skin, making them more efficient at delivering results. (Derma Roller have their own Derma C+ Anti-Ageing Serum you can also try.)
How often should I use the Derma Roller?
No more than twice a week, this works with your skins natural regeneration process. But you can use the skincare products from the range daily.
What sort of results can you expect?
First and foremost, collagen is the key cure for beating the way fine lines and wrinkles appear, so a Derma Roller is going to be great if you’re looking for ways to fight the signs of ageing. The collagen increase will smooth fine lines and plump them out so they look less noticeable. By the same principle it’s also great for scarring if you have, or do suffer with acne too. The skin will look and feel smoother and pores look reduced in size too.
The rising popularity of Derma Rollers is down to the results that you can achieve in such a short space of time. It’s much quicker than a face peel for example, which is designed to do a similar sort of thing. You only need a few minutes to use your roller and you’re done, and you’re safe in the knowledge that you skin is working with you to produce natural collagen. So it’s great if you prefer this type of regime.
If skincare is your thing and you’re on the never ending hunt to find the perfect products then I highly recommend trying a Derma Roller out.
