For the longest time I’d been eyeing up Hourglass products. I’m not even talking months, I’m talking years. I’d looked at and admired their powders especially and just swooned. My inner make up addict got all excited every time I’d have a look at them, and then my bank balance would tell me to sit myself back down. In my opinion Hourglass is one of those very top exclusive-level brands – the brands you aspire to have in your make up collection. But I wasn’t really sure where to start, and without a clear intro product, I just sat swooning for far too long.
I fell down a YouTube hole recently and after watching more videos than I care to remember, I fell upon a tutorial where the YouTuber used the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders – and that was it. I was sold. I purchased a selection of powders and hoped they’d match my skin tone: I knew those babies needed to be welcomed into my previously Hourglass-free make up collection…
It’s not very often I say a single product transforms my make up routine. But the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders have. Bold claim right? But seriously guys – you NEED these in your make up bag. They do…well, everything! I think the reason I held off taking the plunge and purchasing for so long was because I didn’t really understand just how much you can do with them. And now I do, I can see why those who have used them for years, never look back. The best way I can describe them is by saying they’re basically pots of powder in multiple versatile shades that act as an Instagram filter or mood light for your face. The powders work to flatter the most positive light sources on your face – without that light being present. It’s like standing in front of those perfect light sources: the window on a sunny day, a well lit vanity etc. The way they work is to diffuse the hard light and shadows and emphasise the light. So they work amazingly all over the face.
I found I get best results going with the shades that I naturally use on specific facial areas. For example where I use a concealer to highlight and lighten under my eyes, my cheekbone and the centre of my face, I still do this with all my normal products and then use the Ambient Lighting Powder in shade Diffused Light on top. Sort of like a setting powder. It’s the palest creamy colour of the range, and works perfectly to just add that diffused lighting that emphasises those points. And although the powders look like they have very fine shimmer inside them, when applied there’s NOTHING glittery or shimmery about them. (I say this because I wouldn’t use them if so. As someone with oily skin, I do not want to add to the shine!)
I then apply the Ambient Diffused Powder in shade Radiant Light from the Ambient Lighting Palette as my over-contour shade. This is like the ‘bronzer’ shade in my collection, so it goes over my normal contour in the hollows of my cheeks and around my forehead where I like to create shape. This just blurs any harsh lines or contrast in my make up, as between this and the Diffused Light, it makes the whole face look seamless and perfectly blended. It’s like adding an airbrush filter to your face!
I then set my whole face with a huge fluffy brush and dust the Ambient Lighting Powder in shade Luminous Light all over. This shade is the one that most Hourglass addicts re-buy the most (so I hear anyway!) because it’s so universal. It looks like a bronzer in the palette but when on the face it’s just like a gorgeous glow all over. I’m super pale so if it came out bronze I wouldn’t be able to use it all over, so the fact I use it daily shows how the shade is completely universal.
These three powders have allowed me to create a smooth, glowy and healthy looking face. They’ve changed the game when it comes to how I finish my make up. I won’t ever be without them now and although they’re pricey, they’re literally like pots of an Instagram filter in make up form. I can’t say enough good things about them!
Seeing as I was dipping my toe in the Hourglass water, I thought I’d jump right in (see what I did there?!) and try some of their other offerings too. So I tried the Caution Extreme Lash Mascara too. I’m never really wowed by mascara…There’s SO many on the market and how many are ever actually game changers? Only a few…but this is one. I get HUGE lift and curl from this mascara and the first time I applied it, I double blinked at how well it goes on. I was impressed and surprised – although I don’t know why as I’d learned fast that with Hourglass you can expect the best and only the best.
The mascara coats the lashes in thick pigment – but it’s not sticky and it coats the lashes perfectly with no clumps – hurrah! It lifts and curls the lashes to look natural but supported, and they don’t droop all day. I don’t even need to use a curler before applying this as the mascara does all the hard work. And it also doesn’t smudge underneath the eyes all day either – making it a one-application wonder. And it’s another product that’s replaced all my existing products in the category as it’s this I’m reaching for daily now.
Never one to stop once I’m started, I also picked up one of the Hourglass lipsticks – because this girl can never have too many lipsticks! I went for a nice looking nude in the shade I Want, and it’s got the most gorgeous pigmentation. It applies perfectly and keeps my lips looking coated through food and drink. It’s got a shiny satin finish which I love because the market is so saturated with mattes right now, it’s nice for me to stick to the shiny finishes with dimension.
The lipsticks are also things of beauty – a thin tube and designed to be refillable – you never need be without your favourite shades. I’m so impressed with mine that I’ve been eyeing up the massive vault collection (a girl can wish) and I also recently treated myself to the Holiday 2018 Confessions Refillable Lipstick Trio. What can I say? I’ve fallen, and fallen hard for Hourglass.
So if you’ve been on the fence about Hourglass products it’s time to jump down and take the plunge. I really wish I’d done it earlier because these products have all become staples in my collection – every single one. And it’s not often that a whole brands products come along and kick my other daily staples off the vanity. But these do, and I’m okay with that.
