When it comes to ‘feel good’ posts, I didn’t expect to be able to write one for this summer. The loss of loved ones this year has rocked me, along with a lot of other things and it seems like one of those years you don’t look back on with anything other than sadness. HOWEVER, I made a point to sit down and write this post because I wanted to remind myself that despite sadness and huge loss, this summer has presented some really happy moments. And I’m so glad I did because it’s made me look at my overall impression of this year completely differently!
Went On Holiday
We headed to Crete in early August on our first ever couples holidays. Yup, we have children and a house, but we’d never been on holiday together before! Having worked so, so hard to save for the wedding, we really needed a week to spend together, to reconnect and just switch-off. And the holiday was perfect and everything we hoped. We stayed in the most beautiful resort and ate and drank our way between the beach and the pool for a week – it was bliss.
Made new friends on holiday
Speaking of holiday, we made new friends there, which was lovely. We got to know the couple in the room next door to ours, who were at the resort on their honeymoon. We got on really well and had a proper giggle over cocktails. As adults we often forget how nice it is to make new friends, so this made the holiday even nicer.
Got a natural tan!
Another holiday focus here but I am the palest person known to man, no seriously. I’m pale. And I never usually tan AT ALL on holidays anymore. However I got a really nice and natural tan this year and I’m still sporting white bits now – 3 weeks later. So that definitely makes me happy!
Got a gorgeous new watch
It’s the little things, right? And this summer I got to work with MVMT again who kindly sent over my second watch of this year. This time it was their best-selling Orion watch which is gunmetal silver and rose gold and looks so gorgeous. It’s very different to my other watches but I love it and the colours are perfect for autumn too.
Upped my savings for my dream bag
Call me materialistic (I’m not) but I work hard for the things I want – whether that’s a holiday, new things for my children or…my dream bag. I haven’t purchased anything super-duper since I became a Mummy. I’ve just not been able to justify thousands on a new bag – despite having a nice collection pre-mummyhood (which I sold!) However I’ve been putting aside a small amount every-so-often for a while now to go towards two new bags I want. I work hard and I think I deserve them! One is an easy every day tote and the other the statement handbag of dreams. I’m not telling you which yet, but I’m nearly at the point where I can buy the first! Eek!
Received a PR package from Bobbi Brown
My job is my dream career, I love what I do. It’s blooming hard work, but it’s my biggest passion. So naturally when I got my first Bobbi Brown PR package this month from my friends at Fabled by Marie Claire, well, I had a total pinch-me moment. I never take anything for granted in this blogging-world, and this really, really meant a lot to me!
Migrated to WordPress
Currently in the process of this one, so depending on when you read this will depend on whether I’m still on Blogger or I’ve competed the migration to WordPress! I’ve been toying with the idea for a while and I’m going to do a whole blog series on why and how to do it, but for now it’s suffice to say that I’m trying a visual and content rebrand for Lady Writes to allow me to include more lifestyle topics regularly.
Celebrated Hayden’s First Birthday
Where has a year gone? If you find out, please let me know because I have zero idea! Hayden turned one on August 10th and it was the nicest moment. The birthday celebrations lasted five days and were filled with all of his favourite things: toys, playing, fun and lots and lots of food!
Hayden started to walk
As if he wasn’t happy enough to turn one, Hayden also started to walk this summer. It’s actually been nearly two months since his first steps and he’s getting more confident now, but because he’s so speedy at crawling he’s not in a rush to walk alone anywhere. We’ll get there though!
Started my Get The Look Series with Ideal World
As pretty much everyone knows, I used to work at Ideal World and I loved it. Then I went on Maternity Leave and Lady Writes just…blossomed. So I took the plunge into full-time freelancing. Not going back to work was a tough call, but the right thing for me, my family and my business. But it also opened a whole new door and I’ve become a semi-regular Guest Vlogger on the Ideal World YouTube channel! Making all sorts of fashion and style focused content, I’m loving every minute. (Make sure you watch my latest video below)
Filled my freelance quota
As well as Lady Writes becoming my full-time focus, I also run Lady Writes Creative which is a digital marketing business. I manage social media and PR for beauty brands on a one-off and long-term basis depending on client needs. Within three months of starting Lady Writes Creative, my quota is full and I have a waiting list of clients. I still pinch-me every day that I’m living the most amazing dream and able to have the dream job.
(Re)Booked The Wedding
As you all know, we were booked to be getting married in Florida next July. There were several reasons behind this but it meant we were only going to have 15 people at the ceremony (it’s too far to expect people to travel.) However when my cousin died this summer it really did make me reconsider everything. It’s been tough. My fiance was incredibly supportive and basically said we could do whatever I wanted. (He’s a keeper.) So we cancelled the Florida wedding and rebooked for my hometown, where all our closest friends and family can join us for the day. You think you have an endless amount of time to spend with family, but time is precious and fragile, so it means the world to us that our whole family will be sharing in our very special day.
Experimented with meal times
This might not seem like a happy thing but it’s made me happy, so it counts right?! In the hustle and bustle of everyday life I often fall into the trap of cooking the same old meals, which without realising gets boring. So this summer I’ve been experimenting a lot with themed foods and cultural dishes to mix up meal times for our family. Naturally some have been a bit..iffy, but overall we’ve tried some yummy dishes.
Had a huge clear out
It sounds silly doesn’t it, but another thing that made me SO happy this summer was having a mass clear out. My family know this about me, but I randomly get these ideas on the spur of the moment to declutter my whole house – and I did. I chucked away so much stuff that the car was jam-packed full on the way to the tip. But I felt so much better for it afterwards.
Got back into planning
This summer when I started Lady Writes Creative I realised I needed more structure in my day-to-day work to keep on top of both blog deadlines as well as client workloads. So it motivated me to get back into planning. I got my planner out and sorted out a weekly list and system which really works for me and once I week (usually on Sundays) I’ll spend hours putting in cute stickers to make the week ahead organised and pretty. Being creative is an outlet for me so doing this with my planner is relaxing but also vital for my day to day workloads.
So those are 15 things that made me happy this summer, and reading them back has a feel good effect for me. Have you had many feel-good moments this summer that stand out?
