When it comes to fragrances and perfumes, we’ve all got our trusty favourites and our lifetime staples haven’t we? Those one’s we’ll never be without, and the ones we buy now and again. However for me, in the last few years since I started blogging about beauty full-time, fragrances and perfume have become a much broader topic for me. Prior to beauty blogging, I used to have lots of well known brands of perfume on my dressing table. But nothing bespoke, nothing significant – not in the sense that it was out of the ordinary. (Although, I should say that some of these to this day are still my staples, so I’m not knocking them!) It’s just that in the last two years especially, I’ve found a whole new dimension to fragrances – so much more than perfumes, for me, I’ve realised that a bottle of fragrance can mean a memory, a reminder or something emotional. Because perfume isn’t just about smell – it’s about evoking a feeling too.
Maison Margiela are the brand behind Replica fragrances. They’re the ones that basically replicate an actual event or time – making their fragrances so much more than an everyday perfume. Their range of fragrances vary from cosy, happy and sentimental moments in the form of their Lazy Sunday Morning and By The Fireside versions – right through to the replication scent of those fun shared moments like Funfair Evening and Jazz Club. From the names alone you’ll be able to tell that these are more than everyday perfumes, they’re scents to evoke those feelings and memories of some of our most treasured times and experiences. And when you think about it like that, suddenly perfume becomes so much more than just something we spritz on to smell nice each day, doesn’t it?
I’ve recently been wearing Maison Marginal Beach Walk – one of the most popular of the Replica fragrances. It’s made this long, cold winter a lot more bearable because it’s the absolute definition of summer. The fragrance description is “Sun kissed salty skin” and it’s absolutely the most summer-loving fragrance I have ever owned.
To imagine what the scent itself is like, you’ll need to close your eyes and think of walking along the beach on your favourite relaxing holiday. Imagine the sand in-between your toes, the waves washing over your feet, a light breeze blowing through your hair and your skin smelling like coconut sun cream and salt from the sea. That happy and content feeling of pure relaxation….that’s exactly what this smells like.
Of course it’s got top notes (pink pepper and lemon) and base notes (musk and cedar wood) – but the scent they create is so much more than you can imagine. When I wear this, I’m reminded of some of the best summer holiday moments of my whole life and I love that a fragrance can take me back there mentally in an instant. Especially while we seem to be stuck in the never-ending-winter with snow when there should be sunshine!
Within that replicated moment, there’s also a sweetness to the scent which makes it an insatiably female fragrance. It’s feminine, girly and carefree. It’s got a musk level that clings to the skin and a soft cotton-like scent that’s pretty and simple. Much like the girl you imagine walking beside the sea, make-up free, content in her natural beauty. That to me is everything that this fragrance embodies.
For me the Maison Margiela Replica fragrances are so much more than a perfume, and I hope you can see why. I can’t wait to try more of their range and I’m already eyeing up the next addition to start a collection of my own. If you want to remind yourself of summer, live in those relation moments of summer holidays past, then pick up Beach Walk from World Duty Free.
